Sheffield — On Monday, Sept. 16, the town announced on its website that the Kellogg Road bridge will be shut down indefinitely due to safety concerns.
The shutdown will begin on Friday, Sept. 20 at 8 a.m.
According to the town, the Select Board voted unanimously to close the bridge after the Highway Division of the state’s Department of Transportation inspected the bridge.
After its inspection, MassDOT issued a report that recommended that the bridge be closed to all traffic due to the corrosion of three of the five girders on the east end of the bridge.
The Kellogg Road Bridge serves as a connector between Route 7 and Boardman Street.
According to the town, the bridge is on the state’s Transportation Improvement Plan for replacement and “the process could take several years”.
A traffic detour of 2.7 miles will be created by moving traffic to Maple Avenue.
The Select Board along with Town Administrator Rhonda LaBombard are working with an engineering firm to develop a design for a bridge replacement.
The project is listed on MassDOT’s website, with an estimated total contract cost of $5,980,500, and an estimated total federal participating construction cost of $6,423,500.
