JUST IN: Yo-Yo Ma withdraws from Tanglewood appearances due to positive COVID-19 test

After testing positive for COVID-19, Yo-Yo Ma has withdrawn from three scheduled Tanglewood appearances this week.

Lenox — Yo-Yo Ma, who was scheduled for three Tanglewood appearances this week, has withdrawn due to a positive COVID-19 test. He had been scheduled for an open cello workshop today; an open rehearsal Saturday morning, August 12; and a concert Sunday, August 13 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the Shed.

Soprano RenĂ©e Fleming will perform songs by Richard Strauss in place of the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1 that was originally scheduled to be performed with Mr. Ma (both in rehearsal and in concert). In 2016, Fleming performed Strauss’ “Four Last Songs” at a much-talked-about performance in the Shed.

Here is what has NOT been canceled on Sunday’s program: Igor Stravinsky’s spectacular Petrushka (1947 version). The Boston Symphony always gives a spot-on performance of this exciting piece.
