John James Dunn Sr., 91, of Hillsdale N.Y. died Wednesday April 15, 2015 at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. He was born on June 29, 1923 in Brooklyn, N.Y., son to John Peter and Rose (McGrath) Dunn.
John was educated in the one room schoolhouse in Alford, Mass., then graduated from Roe Jan School class of 1941. After high school John went to Springfield College, but left in the fall of 1942 to join the U.S. Navy V-12 program and was commissioned as a Lt. Junior Grade and served on USS LMSR-524 during WWII. John returned to Springfield College in 1946 graduating in 1949 and remained active in the Navy reserves until 1955.
John worked for the State of New York as a Senior Social Services Program Director, retiring in 1984. John was also a long-time farmer in Hillsdale, active in the Hillsdale Cadby-Shutts V.F.W., a member of the Northwestern University Midshipman’s School Association, the Alford Land Trust, a Eucharistic Minister at Saint Peter’s Church in Great Barrington, a member of the Fairview Hospital Fundraising committee, and served on the Hillsdale Zoning Committee and Planning Board.
John loved his family, his farm and his friends. John’s first wife Dorothy (Young) Dunn whom he married on September 9, 1950 predeceased him on July 27, 1970, John’s second wife Mildred “Millie” (Mucich) whom he married June 1, 1975 predeceased him on April 25, 2000. John is survived by his third love, Laura Tucker of Alford, two sons, Mark R. Dunn of Somerville, Mass., and John J. Dunn Jr. and wife Julia of York, Penn.; two daughters, Mary Dunn Delouvrier and husband Christian of Harrington Park, N.J., and Diane Dunn-Lanchantin and husband Richard of Natick, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Mark Delouvrier, Christine Delouvrier Cubbon and husband Stuart, Shawn Rose Lanchantin, Matthew Lanchantin, Holly Lanchantin, Jessica Dunn, Taylor Dunn, and first cousin, Bernard Dunn Jr. and wife Dianne of Canaan.
Funeral services for John James Dunn Sr., who died Wednesday April 15, will be held on Monday April 20, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church with the Reverend William P. Murphy, pastor officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
