John “Jack” J. Hurley Jr. of Lenox passed away at Berkshire Medical Center from complications from kidney disease on February 14, 2023. He died peacefully surrounded by his family.
Born in Pittsfield on January 15, 1942, he was the second of 11 children of the late John and Mary Rennie Hurley. He served in the U.S. Army as a member of the 101st Airborne from 1959 to 1962.

Jack married the love of his life, Estella Morse, on July 24, 1963. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this July. They went on to have three children, who were the center of Jack’s world. He was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren. The family resided in Becket where Jack coached Little League and was often found outdoors enjoying nature. He worked at the Mead Paper Co. in Lee for 34 years, retiring in 1997. Stella and Jack retired to Leesburg, Fla. for 15 years. They returned to Lenox in 2013.
Jack is survived by his children, Kathleen DeVarennes (Michael) of Lee, Patricia Correia (Daniel) of Livermore, Calif., and John J. Hurley III (Angel) of Becket; his grandchildren, Tanner DeVarennes, Hadley DeVarennes, Morgan Correia, Kyle Correia, and Tyler Hurley; his brothers, Terrence Hurley of Auburn, Calif. and Matthew Hurley (Carol) of Colorado Springs, Colo; his sisters, Mary Armstrong (Arthur) of Pittsfield and Lillian Matelli (Steve) of Darlington, Md.; and his numerous nieces and nephews.
Jack was predeceased by two grandchildren, Chelsea Jennifer Hurley and Garret Morse DeVarennes, and six brothers, James, Patrick, Michael, Peter, Charles, and Timothy.
A graveside funeral service for the late John J. Hurley of Lenox will take place on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at 11 a.m. at the Fairmount Cemetery in Lee. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Hospice Care of the Berkshires in care of the Roche Funeral Home, P.O. Box 152, Lenox, MA 01240.
