Jean Curtis, 93, of Sheffield, ran school lunch programs

Jean worked for many years running the school lunch programs at Mt. Everett and New Marlborough Schools.

Jean Curtis, 93, of Sheffield died Monday February 27, 2017 at Timberlyn East Nursing Home in Great Barrington. She was born in Great Barrington on the Spaulding Estate on September 21, 1923 daughter of George and Edith (Kaspar) Merchant.

Jean was a graduate of the former Searles High School and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Bentley College. Jean worked for many years running the school lunch programs at Mt. Everett and New Marlborough Schools. She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Valley Church in Sheffield and a member of the Thursday Morning Club for 33 years.

Jean’s husband Vincent W. Curtis predeceased her on March 30, 1996.

Jean is survived by her son, Kevin Curtis of Sheffield and two brothers, Kenneth A. Merchant of Tallahassee, Fla., and Robert Merchant of Wooster, Ohio.

In keeping with Jean’s wishes there will be no calling hours and a private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy in Jean’s memory may be made to Our Lady of the Valley Memorial Fund or The Thursday Morning Club. A funeral service for Brian “B.O.” Ovitt will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Birches-Roy Funeral Home, with Pastor Regina King officiating. Family and friends are also invited to calling hours on Friday, Feb. 20, 2026, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
