Jacob’s Pillow’s ‘On the Road’ series performs in Great Barrington

"While there is so much division in the world, the truth is that we are all connected,” Jacob’s Pillow Director of Community Engagement Thasia Giles said. “Dance brings us into our shared humanity, which increases our generosity, our compassion, and our understanding.”

Great Barrington — As part of their On the Road series, the Becket-based dance organization, Jacob’s Pillow, held a performance behind Town Hall on Saturday, July 16.

The performance was part of a multi-stop event that included outdoor dance performances in North Adams, Becket, and Pittsfield.

The performance on July 16 included the Versa-Style Dance Company’s performing their “Origins of Hip Hop” and the BSKE Dance Community Group performing salsa dances.

“We believe that dancing brings people together,” Jacob’s Pillow Director of Community Engagement Thasia Giles said. “It creates joy and spaces for all of us to have a shared experience. We also believe it is a catalyst for change as well. It feels especially important now because this idea of coming together and being in a space together is important.”

“In Berkshire County, there is no public transportation,” Jacob’s Pillow Producing Director Ariana Massery said. “To get to Jacob’s Pillow from the towns we are stopping at, you need a car. It’s important to bring a performance like this to towns in Berkshire County.”

Over 100 people attended the July 16 event, oftentimes dancing as the performance went on.

“While there is so much division in the world, the truth is that we are all connected,” Giles said. “Dance brings us into our shared humanity, which increases our generosity, our compassion, and our understanding.”
