To the editor:
In the 1950s, there were sit-ins in the North protesting Woolworth’s for not serving Black people at their lunch counters. In the 1960s, there were demonstrations against the Vietnam War. Those instances were referred to as “civil disobedience,” a peaceful form of protest. This is now our time to protest.
The same president who threatened to use military force to take over Greenland and the Panama Canal will not abide by a court order to bring back an innocent person he illegally sent to a hellhole prison in El Salvador. Nobody, including the president, is above the law.
Law firms have had over $1 billion extorted from them to take up issues that Trump favors. Major companies have been forced to eliminate DEI initiatives, or face retribution from Trump. Colleges and universities are being threatened with losing congressionally approved federal funding if they do not kowtow to Trump’s demands. None of this is legal. Enough.
Individually, these organizations are vulnerable to Trump‘s wrath, but if they band together as a group, they are financially capable of fighting him in the courts. Harvard has started. It is standing alone by not allowing Trump to control their university while potentially losing $9 billion in federal funding. Other institutions of higher learning should follow Harvard‘s lead en masse, as should law firms and any illegally bullied party. Trump’s tactics should immediately be brought to the Supreme Court for relief.
