To the editor:
I was glad to hear Michelle Goldberg say in a recent New York Times opinion piece that she felt “bullied” by the Democratic Party’s refusal to listen to voters’ concerns about Biden’s age. That is how I feel too.
All Democrats of course want to succeed in the primary goal of defeating Donald J. Trump and his right-wing power-grab agenda. The disagreement is how best to reach this goal, and it is true that this is no time for intra-party haggling and jockeying. But it is also true that this is no time for sticking our heads in the sand and pretending all is well.
It is time to bid Biden a grateful farewell and move on with a more vigorous Democratic candidate at the helm of this year’s campaign.
As Ezra Klein has been arguing for months now, what is needed is an open Democratic Convention, messy and surprising as it would be, at which candidates show up, make speeches, and work to impress and persuade the delegates who will vote to create a ticket.
Just because something is unprecedented doesn’t mean it should be off limits. In fact, new thinking and bold action is exactly what is needed in these unprecedented times.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. We need the Democratic Party to listen to the people and let Biden go to his well-deserved retirement, stepping aside to let the next generation of Democratic leaders take up the torch.
