To the editor:
Today was a day of immense historical significance for me. I had the privilege of attending Independent Living Education Day at the Massachusetts State House, where I was joined by esteemed guests including State Rep. Leigh Davis and Sara Hadsell and Sally English from AdLib in Pittsfield. The speakers delivered compelling presentations, highlighting the potential consequences of proposed cuts to MassHealth and their adverse impact on the disabled community as a whole.
Since the age of eight, I have been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). IBS was followed by approximately 15 years of colitis, and Crohn’s at 23. At the age of 26, I am currently facing a diagnosis of endometriosis and, potentially, even colon cancer. The loss of access to my infusions and biologics would have a profound impact on my well-being. I am currently receiving treatment with Entivyo and Zeposia. The impending changes we face are deeply concerning, and it is imperative that we collectively advocate for the preservation of our rights.
As individuals living with disabilities, we require a sense of security and protection. Ed Markey has cautioned us about the potential reduction in funding for food banks and pantries. This is an opportune moment for us to stand up for our democratic rights.
Despite my high-functioning autism and a multitude of disabilities, I will not deter myself from my mission of becoming a doctor to leverage the medicine field through the integration of technology. We must be innovative and creative in addressing the challenges we face in the current world. Please scream it out this April 5: Don’t roll back our rights! Hands off everything!
