To the editor:
Did you breath easier when the Kinder Morgan/NED pipeline terminated? Is anyone safe from another massive pipeline, industrial compressor stations or fossil fueled energy plants? Are you out of the woods?
Remains to be seen.
Opportunities and economics could reactivate the NED or new fossil fuel pipeline(s) through our neighborhoods.
Should OPEC agreements raise fuel prices or exports grow or cold winters return, or congress pass a current version of the U.S. Energy Policy Modernization Act of 2016 as written, a pipeline is likely to return.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Energy Policy Modernization Act of 2016, the Senate and House passed unreconciled versions. Both very friendly to energy producers, and transporters like Kinder Morgan. Both greatly reduce abilities and time for communities and states to review and organize to oppose pipelines.
Whereas New York State had a year to make determinations on the NED, this proposed legislation would reduce state review to 90 days. Whereas NYS can now stop a pipeline by not providing a water quality permit, should a pipeline not comply with NYS regulations and recommendations, under proposed new laws, a Federal panel would have final decision over state decisions. The state could be overruled by a Federal entity. Such panels are staffed by energy industry insiders.
Don’t let your guard down! Be vigilant!
Actively oppose current versions of the Energy Policy Modernization Act of 2016. Support local anti-pipeline groups like Stop NY Fracked Gas Pipeline (SNYFGP). SNYFGP will not continue to exist without your active support!
