Some of you may remember a TV character from days gone by: Sergeant Schultz, the bungling, cowardly supervisor of prisoners-of-war on “Hogan’s Heroes,” broadcast on CBS from 1965 to 1970. Schultz’s famous refrain, occurring on each and every episode of the show, was “I know nothing! I hear nothing! I see nothing!” as the prisoners caused mayhem throughout the camp and plotted to escape through a hand-hewn tunnel under the floorboards of their barracks.
Donald Trump appears to be the Sergeant Schultz of American politics. He knew nothing about the Nazis of Charlottesville, except that they appeared to be “very fine people.” He has never heard of David Duke, a standard-bearer for the Ku Klux Klan. He knew nothing about the COVID virus that was killing millions of people worldwide. He knew nothing about Saudi Prince Mohamed Bin Salman’s murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi; he had no idea that he was dining with a lunatic (Kanye West) and a Nazi (Nick Fuentes) at a private dinner he hosted for them at Mar-a-Lago. He knew nothing about Putin’s multiple attempts to interfere with our elections or the incessant poisoning of Putin’s detractors.
Sergeant Shultz, indeed.
He knew nothing of Stormy Daniels. He knew nothing of E. Jean Carroll. He knew nothing of the murders of Black Americans by the police. He knew nothing of his fraudulent tax returns. He knows nothing about flushing official documents down the toilet. He knows nothing of the January 6 insurrectionists. He knows nothing of his own relentless attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
Given a recent exposé of the private habits of Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R – N.C.), who enjoys visiting porn sites and porn stores where he identifies himself as a “Black Nazi,” it likely won’t be long before Donald Trump knows nothing of Mark Robinson, either. No matter that Trump vigorously endorsed him in the Republican primary and compared him favorably to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
And Trump now knows nothing of the Heritage Foundation’s blueprint for ending democracy, “Project 2025,” even though the former head of the Heritage Foundation knew Trump well enough to hitch rides on Trump’s private plane, and even though it was written by handpicked members of Trump’s former administration, handpicked members of his campaign, and his current vice presidential running mate.
The assertion that Trump knows nothing about Project 2025 is laughable. It’s like trying to stuff 10 pounds of baloney into a 5 pound sack. As one might predict, the sack runneth over.
He knows nothing. He sees nothing. He hears nothing.
He knows nothing of the Supreme Court members he nominated specifically to overturn Roe v. Wade, and he knows nothing of his own well-articulated plan to make abortion illegal. He knows nothing of fake electors, election tampering, or business fraud. He appears to know nothing about anything.
Do Americans really want to elect a presidential candidate who is this unaware, this obtuse, and this… stupid?
Trump says he knows more about the military than his own generals, more about economics than the Federal Reserve, more about geopolitics than the State Department, and has intellectual abilities so formidable that he has anointed himself a “very stable genius.”
Yet he knows nothing.
Just like Sargeant Schultz.
Pity.
