News and Ideas Worth Sharing

I see the future, and it is scary

This is not about politics. It is about saving our 250-year-old democracy. To do this, we need Republicans to step up and help.

To the editor:

You do not need to visit a fortune teller, read tarot cards, or put your hands on a Ouija board to know what Trump is planning because he and his minions say it out loud. He is usually looking for a reaction, but not from sources others would rely on for feedback.

Trump disregards what Democrats, foreign governments, and voters across the country say about his actions. The only response he seems to pay attention to is that of Republicans in Congress. When there is strong pushback from them, Trump recognizes he has to change course or drop his plan. Nationalizing federal elections, which is unconstitutional, is an example of this, so Trump may muse about it to make headlines, but it won’t happen.

The Epstein files, harsh treatment by ICE, lack of due process, disregard for the rule of law and the Constitution, partisan decision-making, acts of vengeance, and selling pardons are all examples of why Republicans’ failure to restrain Trump will likely cost them their majorities in both chambers. Trump recognizes this and has been quoted as saying that if the Democrats control the House, they will impeach him, causing Trump to do whatever he can to rig the 2026 midterm elections.

He started by saying Texas should gerrymander districts because Republicans are “entitled” to five additional seats. This was met with Democrats doing the same in states they control, so the outcome will probably be a net-zero gain for both parties.

Trump is trying to minimize votes in Democrat strongholds. The use of ICE as a private militia is an integral part of Trump’s midterm election plan, as is pushing for voter IDs to confirm you are a citizen. Steve Bannon stated ICE will be surrounding voting venues to ensure there isn’t fraud. This use of intimidation is illegal, but Trump 2.0 is not known for following the law, the Constitution, nor a judge’s order. The emocrats have stood firm in not allowing ICE funding without conditions, which hopefully will stifle Trump’s militia plans.

This is not about politics. It is about saving our 250-year-old democracy. To do this, we need Republicans to step up and help. Otherwise, you can expect Trump to claim there was massive fraud in the election, which he will say is the only way the Democrats could have won. How do we know this? Because he repeatedly says it.

It’s not too late, but time is running out!

Bard College President Botstein’s continued leadership is no longer tenable

When someone has held power for nearly half a century, it can become easy to confuse longevity with legitimacy, or position with immunity. But tenure is not a substitute for trust.

An empty chair by Section 9 at Tanglewood

Although Lou’s Section 9 chair will be occupied by others in coming seasons, for us who loved him, we will always remember it as the seat of the “Mayor of Tanglewood.”
