I hope Berkshire Hills does not succumb to the book-banning hysteria

We can discuss appropriateness of certain books for certain age groups with our School Board; it is certainly not a matter for the police!

To the editor:

I was absolutely horrified and outraged to read about the Great Barrington police entering the Du Bois Middle School and searching for a book due to an unnamed person’s complaint. What kind of poor leadership is there in our police department when this is allowed to happen? Police are certainly not the appropriate way to handle such an issue!

Per your article, Dillon wrote in his email. “… an officer in plain clothes tried to locate that book. … and they looked for the book, but did not find it.”

I have read this book and did not find it pornographic, but the author does discuss their efforts to understand their own sexuality. It is really a book about a child’s search to understand their own identity, and it offers some of us an opportunity to better understand the pain some young adults are dealing with.

This book is not for everyone, but it could be a lifesaver for some confused or lost young people.

I hope Berkshire Hills families are not going to succumb the book-banning hysteria.

I urge Egremont voters to vote against adopting the Community Preservation Act

In my public service and in business, I have always found that actions matter and promises don’t. On housing in Egremont, I see lots of promises and very little action, and I don’t envision that changing.
