Herbert W. Eichstedt Jr., 80, of Mill River

After his service for the U.S. Army in Vietnam, Herbert drove school buses for John Ormsbee, Macy’s and Bachetti’s, worked as a night watchman for Mead Paper Co. in South Lee for more than 18 years and as a maintenance man for Construct Inc. for 10 years.

Herbert W. Eichstedt Jr., 80, of Mill River, Mass., died Wednesday May 6, 2015 at Fairview Commons Nursing and Rehab.

He was born on April 25, 1935 in Sheffield, Mass., son of Herbert W. Sr. and Emeline (Markham) Eichstedt. Herbert was a graduate of the former Sheffield Center High School class of 1954. After high school Herbert proudly served his country with the U.S. Army in Vietnam.

After his service Herbert drove school buses for John Ormsbee, Macy’s and Bachetti’s, worked as a night watchman for Mead Paper Co. in South Lee for more than 18 years and as a maintenance man for Construct Inc. for 10 years.

Herbert is survived by his wife, Martha (Stehlin) Eichstedt, four sons: James Eichstedt of Sheffield, Herbert W. Eichstedt III of Mill River, Brian L. Eichstedt Sr. of North Carolina, and Paul Eichstedt of Ashley Falls, Mass.; two brothers, Leon Eichstedt of Mill River and Peter Eichstedt of Sheffield; one sister, Wanda Clan of Housatonic, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Herbert was predeceased by sister Carol and his favorite companion, Abby.

Funeral Services for Herbert W. Eichstedt Jr. who died Wednesday May 6 will be held on Monday May 11 at 11:30 a.m. with a graveside service at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Great Barrington with the Rev. William P. Murphy Pastor officiating. Burial will be with Military Honors. Family will receive friends on Sunday, May 10 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington MA 01230. Robert ‘Bob’ Hebert, 89, of Monterey

Bob won over 100 races in his career. He was voted SVRA Driver of the Year. He was inducted into the Road Racing Drivers Club, along with such others as Mario Andretti and Stirling Moss. Today, two of Bob’s four grandchildren continue his racing legacy.
