Herbert L. Cary, 91, of Sheffield died Wednesday May 27, 2015 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Herbert was born in Johnston, R.I., on April 20, 1924, son of Harry and Emma (Bouchard) Cary. Herbert proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific as a Carrier Pilot. He married Marjorie (Sykes) Cary in 1946, and then moved to Sheffield in 1955 where they raised their family of five daughters and four sons.

Herbert was ordained as a Deacon in the Catholic Church in 1993 and served at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Sheffield for 20 years. He enjoyed giving the residents of New Boston Nursing Home communion on Wednesdays.

Herbert is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marjorie (Sykes) Cary, nine children, 17 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Herbert L. Cary, who died Wednesday May 27, will be held on Wednesday June 3, at 11 a.m. with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Valley Church with the Rev. Bruce N. Teague pastor officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Our Lady of the Valley Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Tuesday June 2, from 4-6 p.m. at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA. 01230. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy in Herbert’s memory may be made to Catholic Relief Services, 228 W. Lexington Street Baltimore, Md., 21201-3443.
