Hazel E. Wool, 94, of Great Barrington

She worked as a telephone operator and then as a homemaker, taking care of her family.

Hazel E. Wool, 94, of Great Barrington died Thursday, April 23, 2020, at Fairview Commons in Great Barrington. Hazel was born Aug. 3, 1925, in Great Barrington, daughter to Frank Jr. and Elsie (Zaske) Gorham. She was a graduate of the former Searles High School class of 1943. She worked as a telephone operator and then as a homemaker, taking care of her family. Hazel was a member of the First Congregational Church in Great Barrington and enjoyed spending time with her family. Hazel’s husband, Joseph Wool Sr., predeceased her April 8, 1993.

Hazel is survived by one son: Joseph Wool Jr. and wife Suzanne of Great Barrington; three daughters: Gail Slavinski and husband Jamie of Great Barrington, Joanne Koivisto of Arizona and husband Henry; and Ruth Ellen Parmalee and husband Dennis of Naples, Florida; six grandchildren: BJ Wool, Jennifer Childs, Allison Parmalee, Katie Wool, Steven Wool and Joseph J. Wool; and five great-grandchildren: George, Vivienne and Henry Childs and Lucy and Nina Waggener. In addition to her husband, Hazel was predeceased by sister Marian Gorham, and brothers William Gorham and Frank “Flannigan” Gorham.

The funeral services for Hazel E. Wool were private out of concern for the health and safety of her friends and family due to the threat of coronavirus. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Hazel’s memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. Funeral Mass for Robert F. "Bob" Keefner will be held on Friday, May 23, at 10 a.m., with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at Saint Peter’s Church in Great Barrington with Reverend William P. Murphy Pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
