Haven Café and Bakery in Lenox never disappoints, a restaurant review

Haven is one of my favorite places to eat breakfast in the Berkshires.

Lenox — Haven is one of my favorite places to eat breakfast in the Berkshires. My daughter only had a short bit of free time after getting home from college and starting her summer job, so we snuck in breakfast at Haven last week.

Every time I go, I order the polenta special, and like always, it was wonderful—this time with poached eggs, goat cheese, ramp pesto, and marinated tomatoes, served with a large bed of lightly dressed greens. This dish never disappoints and gets a “chef’s kiss” from me every time. The polenta is creamy, the goat cheese is tangy, the ramp pesto sings, and the marinated tomatoes balance the dish with brightness and freshness. Also of note, the portion size is substantial.

My daughter is a picky eater. She ordered the wheat-free French toast—triangles of local, gluten-free sourdough bread dipped in cinnamon-vanilla egg batter and dusted with powdered sugar. It was served with a giant pile of fresh blueberries, and she ordered a side of bacon. She enjoyed every bite and washed it all down with a Boylan’s root beer served chilled in a glass bottle.

While I prefer a regular hot (or iced) coffee with my meal, Haven offers interesting coffee drinks like the Caramel Inferno Latte or the Jasmine Maple Latte. They also offer cocktails like Haven Mimosa or the Elderflower Blood Orange Spritz.

For dessert, we shared a white velvet mini cupcake with lemon curd and cream cheese frosting, and a chocolate ginger pecan cookie—both very good, especially the mini cupcake, which gets a “mini chef’s kiss” from me.

If you go, get the polenta special and a hot regular coffee. The Toad in the Hole, the French Rolled Omelettes, and the Toasts on the menu look delicious, too. Next time I go, I think I will try the Roasted Wild Mushroom Toast dressed with onion confit, goat cheese, and rosemary oil, which I haven’t stopped thinking about it since seeing it on the menu.

Haven is located at 8 Franklin Street in downtown Lenox. Breakfast is served weekdays from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., lunch is served weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and brunch is served on weekends from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Both indoor and outdoor dining is offered.
