To the editor:
By now we have all read about the latest crime figures released by the FBI: Despite violent crime declining statewide, it is on the rise in two of our precious Berkshire communities. Out of the 14 counties, 39 cities and 312 towns in the Commonwealth, North Adams ranks first and Pittsfield ranks fifth in violent crime. So where do we go from here? How do we as a county address this startling reality? How do we take our streets back while healing the wounds we have endured? How do we disrupt cycles of addiction, crime and violence? Who is accountable to us?
The district attorney is the top law enforcement officer in the county. This is an office that, when used to its potential, can serve as a community partner in addressing these issues. This is an office with the ability and, I would argue, the responsibility to act creatively and practically in ensuring public safety. The DA is an elected position because of the power it holds. The old way of doing business is not working. We need and deserve better.
We need strong prevention and diversion programs to combat the opioid epidemic. We need a DA who will hold violent criminals, domestic abusers and rapists accountable for their actions. To do any of this, we need a DA who understands our communities; we need a DA who shows up not only when it is election season. That candidate is the Democratic nominee Andrea Harrington.
Andrea Harrington has proven herself to be committed to this county, and she has shown that commitment by showing up in all corners of the county long before this race began. Andrea Harrington has the commitment, experience, leadership and courage we need in district attorney’s office.
On Tuesday, Nov. 6, join me in voting for accountability. Join me in filling in the oval for Andrea Harrington.
