News and Ideas Worth Sharing

HomeNewsHappy Birthday, Berkshire...

Happy Birthday, Berkshire Edge!

We set out to create a publication for the Berkshires that would truly engage the life, interests and aspirations of this unusually diverse community. And, as we hoped, a lively exchange of reader comments has turned The Edge into the community forum where readers reflect on and participate in issues that matter, and where actions and ideas are illuminated with wit, intelligence, insight and humor by people you may know.

The Berkshire Edge is one year old today, and David Scribner, our editor, and I, proud parents, are thrilled that our baby can not only hold a rattle but can make a hell of a lot of noise with it.

We want to thank the readers who have found and endorsed us, and the advertisers who have come on board and who are helping to build us into a strong and viable voice for progress, fairness, justice and truth in this region.

Since we launched, we have posted 890 articles and several thousand calendar entries. Even more important, you, our readers, have contributed 1,433 comments, many of them lengthy, thoughtful and important statements. It’s safe to say that every important issue that concerned our community this year has been hashed out on the pages of The Edge.

This is exactly what David and I hoped would happen. We set out to create a publication for the Berkshires that would truly engage the life, interests and aspirations of this unusually diverse community. Articles in The Berkshire Edge come from people who live and love life in the Berkshires – 91 different writers so far. They are local journalists, columnists, artists, writers, civic activists, parents, educators, students, representatives of business and professions, your friends and neighbors.

The Internet has made it possible for us to serve you with breaking news and information, and to follow stories in real time as they develop. And, as we hoped, a lively exchange of reader comments has turned The Edge into the community forum where readers reflect on and participate in issues that matter, and where actions and ideas are illuminated with wit, intelligence, insight and humor by people you may know.

We have the best calendar – online or in print – in the area! It’s searchable by date and category, and covers the full range of Berkshire events, from Tanglewood to Tai Chi. We have recently added new features: Jobs, and a brand new Home, Garden and Design section. Stay tuned for more new entries in the coming months.

So, as we enter year two, we hope we will continue to earn your enthusiastic support. Please help us grow by becoming not only a visitor but also a subscriber…a full-fledged member of the Edge community. Remember, it truly does take a community to raise a child.

Best regards,

Marcie L. Setlow

A mother, an Oscar-winning movie, and a legacy: Filming begins on ‘You Haunt Me’ starring Tony-winning actress Maryann Plunkett

“We are filming at the house in Great Barrington where [my mother] lived and died," Joe Symons said of the short film. "It will be a hard experience for me. But it will also be very healing. It will be a final send-off for her, making peace with both her life and death."
