To the editor:
The Great Barrington Declaration offers further proof that a lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes. The implication that the Town of Great Barrington supports herd immunity for a deadly virus has been insufficiently challenged by the Town. In response to the American Institute for Economic Research’s misappropriation and sullying of the Town’s good name, as forceful a denunciation as proposed by Selectboard member Leigh Davis is warranted.
In court, we would say it informs us when a party has failed to quickly denounce an accusation. The slower or less forceful the response, the greater likelihood of the statement’s veracity. The court of public opinion is no different. Rather than seeking to dilute Ms. Davis’ strongly worded letter, the Selectboard should embrace it – and distribute its denunciation far and wide. One way to stop a lie is to more loudly shout the truth.
