Great Barrington — Following social media posts with videos showing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents staged in the Railroad Street parking lot adjacent to Great Barrington’s Triplex Cinema, at least one local resident, and reportedly two residents, have been apprehended.
According to multiple sources who requested anonymity, an individual apprehended in the incident is employed as a kitchen chef in a local Mexican restaurant in the Agaves Mexican Grill/Fiesta Restaurant Enterprise owned by Sandra Sosa.
This individual has lived in an apartment above the Railroad Street commercial restaurant sector for the past year to possibly four years. Reportedly a Mexican national, he is described as being in his late-20’s, “very hard working,” and with a family, including a young child, back home.
One source, who lives in the same complex, provided a first-hand account of the incident. He said he woke up to noise outside and saw an individual in plainclothes in the hallway as well as another male around 9 a.m. on May 6. The two were speaking to a maintenance worker, showing him photos of individuals including the male who was apprehended.
A few minutes later, the source observed the named individual in handcuffs outside of his unit. He heard the apprehended individual request that his manager be called as well as one arresting officer telling another officer to “turn him over to the U.S. Marshal’s Office.”
The source said the officers were wearing tactical uniforms with the word “POLICE” embedded on their vests and observed a couple of SUVs and a white van in the parking lot.
That source described the apprehended individual as “a good kid,” who “never bothered anybody” and is “very friendly.”
The sources had knowledge of two individuals detained but no information on the second person.
