Great Barrington Fire Department extinguishes chimney fire at Division Street property

There were no reported injuries and damage to the building was limited to the roof area of the building, the metal chimney system, and portions of the attic,

Editor’s note: The following is a press release submitted to The Berkshire Edge by Great Barrington Fire Department’s Public Information Officer Lt. Brian Mead.

Great Barrington — At approximately 4:07 p.m. on Monday, October 13, the Great Barrington Fire Department was dispatched to 173 Division Street for a reported chimney fire.

Additional reports and Great Barrington Police Department upon arrival, indicated that the fire had extended from the chimney to the roof structure.

Deputy Chief James Mead (Car 3) arrived on scene and confirmed an active structure fire. A first alarm was struck, bringing mutual aid assistance from the Egremont Fire Department, Monterey Fire Department, and Southern Berkshire Ambulance to the scene. The Sheffield Fire Department was assigned to cover the Great Barrington station during the incident.

Great Barrington Engine 3 arrived shortly after with a crew of 3 and made an aggressive initial attack, quickly knocking down visible flames on the roof exterior before advancing inside to address fire conditions in the smoke-filled attic space. The fire was brought under control by 4:30 p.m., and crews remained on scene performing overhaul and checking for extension. Their efforts confirmed that the fire was confined to the roof and attic structure.

In total, Great Barrington responded with 10 firefighters, two engines, a ladder truck, and a rescue unit. All units cleared the scene by 5:45 p.m. There were no reported injuries.

Damage was limited to the roof area, the metal chimney system, and portions of the attic, but the occupants were able to return to their home later that evening.

“Chimney fires are a reminder of how important it is to maintain and clean your chimney at least once per year, especially before the heating season begins,” said Fire Chief Scott Turner. “Creosote buildup inside flues can ignite and quickly spread to surrounding structural components. Homeowners should have their chimney inspected and cleaned by a qualified professional and ensure that any wood-burning appliances are properly installed and operated.”

While on standby, Sheffield Fire was also dispatched to a separate carbon monoxide (CO) alarm activation in the Housatonic section of town, demonstrating the value of coordinated regional response and mutual aid coverage.
