GB Fairgrounds draws attention from Waldorf High School senior class

The Senior Class at the Berkshire Waldorf High School in Stockbridge is exploring imaginative ways of representing the history of a particular place, talking with those involved in it, and then translating their impressions into a collaborative "documentary illustration." The first topic the class selected is the ongoing restoration of the Great Barrington Fairgrounds.

Stockbridge — The senior class at the Berkshire Waldorf High School is in the midst of a class called Documentary Illustration given by illustrator and children’s book author Adam Gudeon. Inspired by the “Drawn Journalism” of artists such as Wendy MacNaughton and Maira Kalman, the students approach a subject through the intimate process of drawing on site and speaking with the people on site. The result is the depiction of a place or topic presented through their own drawn vision and few words, capturing something of the essence of the structures and history.

For this first piece for the Berkshire Edge, they’ve spent time drawing at the Great Barrington Fairgrounds and speaking with Bart Elsbach, co-founder with Janet Elsbach, of the GBFG Community Redevelopment project.
