GARY LEVEILLE: The Monterey Library

The present-day Monterey Post Office was built on the site of the old library building in the 1960s.

The town of Monterey established its first library in 1891, overlooking the Konkapot River. The modest building is shown above circa 1915. The library moved to its present location on Main Street in 1931. A major renovation was completed in 2019. The present-day Monterey Post Office was built on the site of the old library building in the 1960s. Monterey’s first post office was established in 1825 when the village was known as South Tyringham.
