Gaetano Anthony ‘Guy’ Saporito, 89, of Housatonic

A funeral mass will be held at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish in Housatonic on Jan. 24 at 10 a.m., followed by a burial at St Bridget’s Cemetery in Housatonic. Visiting hours will be held at Birches-Roy Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23.

Gaetano Anthony “Guy” Saporito, 89, of Housatonic, husband of Mary (Andersen) Saporito, died unexpectedly at home on Saturday, January 17, 2026. He was born in Brooklyn in 1936 to first-generation Italian immigrants Gaetano and Marianna Saporito.

Gaetano Anthony “Guy” Saporito.

Guy was a devoted family man with strong connections not only to his siblings Teresa, Lucille, and Rudy, but also to his countless cousins, nieces, and nephews. Guy married the love of his life, Mary Andersen, in 1959, and they built a 66-year legacy together rooted in love, family, support, generosity, and hard work.

Guy worked in textile factory management for 24 years at United Merchants in Jewett City, Conn., and, beginning in 1982, worked for Housatonic Curtain Company until his retirement in 2003. He was respected and admired not only for his strong work ethic but for the compassion he showed for all his employees. Guy was a current member of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish in Housatonic and a former member of St. Mary’s Church in Jewett City, where he was also a member of the Griswold Board of Education for 12 years. Guy was an avid Mets fan who supported youth sports as a little league coach and was an ever-present supporter of Griswold and Monument Mountain basketball. Guy loved to read, and when blindness robbed him of this passion, he continued to learn, visit new places, and stay mentally stimulated, while also finding comfort in listening to countless books on tape.

In addition to his loving wife Mary, Guy leaves behind his beloved children: Susan Irwin and her husband Michael of Killingworth, Conn.; Guy Saporito Jr. of East Lyme, Conn.; Michael Saporito and his wife Marie (DiNunzio) of Monterey; and Marianna Saporito of Waterford, Conn. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Michael, Thomas, Elise, Ariana, Nicholas, Bella, AJ, and Angela, and his brother Rudy Saporito and his wife Maria of Staten Island, N.Y.

A funeral mass will be held at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish in Housatonic on January 24 at 10 a.m., followed by a burial at St Bridget’s Cemetery in Housatonic. Visiting hours will be held at Birches-Roy Funeral Home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, January 23.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations in Guy’s memory to the Perkins Library at the Perkins School for the Blind at support.perkins.org or at 175 North Beacon Street Watertown, MA 02472. Condolences may be made through birchesroyfuneralservices.com.
