Pittsfield — This morning, the city’s fire department responded to a fire at Blythewood Drive that damaged what the department described as a “log cabin” style residence made out of heavy timber.
According to a press release from the department, initially the fire appeared to be from a masonry chimney in the building.
However, crews determine that the fire was from heavy timber logs around the fireplace.
Members of the department developed a plan to safely remove an interior stone façade that extended from the building’s floor to its ceiling in order to gain access to the fire.
In the press release, the department described the removal of the stone as a “very labor intensive task.”
As crews worked, members of the department deployed salvage covers to prohibit damage from falling wood, stone, and damage from water.
Eventually, sections of the log wall in the building were removed which exposed a soldering fire that was removed and extinguished from the residence.
The department did not report any injuries due to the fire, but damage to the property appears to be extensive.
