$60Robert Frost’s North of Boston: We will explore the power of Frost’s poetry in four of the poems and his way of drawing us into people’s lives through narrative – stories of everyday people, told through their manner of speaking, and revealing the dilemmas and crises of their lives.
The Adventures of Clara and Robert Schumann: With the assistance & humor of Dr. Robert Greenberg and his Great Courses video lectures we will investigate this “dynamic duo” musically and personally. And listen to some great recordings of their (capital “R” ) Romantic and deeply intellectual musical compositions. German Romanticism contained much depth of thought, and perhaps even more so, emotion. We will increase our awareness and appreciation of this extraordinary couple and their world.
Documentary Films on Spies and More Spies: Spies have been pivotal in war strategy, information gathering, policy development and execution, for centuries. In this course we will focus on spies who played critical roles in WWII, the Cold War, and beyond.
Exploring Alice Munro’s Stories: This class will focus on stories from Family Furnishings, a collection from 2014 that includes stories written in the late part of her career. Each of our 6 sessions will be devoted to discussion of one or two stories. We will also read several interviews or articles about Munro that contribute to our understanding of her writing and listen to excerpts of recorded readings of several of the stories. Members will need to have access to a copy of Family Furnishing.
Industrial History of the Northwest Corner: Connecticut has a rich industrial history, producing products as varied as clocks, elevators, bells and submarines. The NW corner of the state is no exception. Industrial activity in our area started before the country was born and continues in modest form into the 21st century. This course covers the industries that emerged in Norfolk, Canaan, Sharon and Salisbury and the wide range of products they produced.
The Roberts Court 2023-2024: From Clean Air to Immunity: We will examine the issues, key decisions, and controversy of the Court in it’s past term as it upended established precedent, charted new territory, and found itself in scandals involving several justices.
