TAA Community Film Series: Nathan-Ism + talkback
January 12 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm
$10This remarkable documentary portrays the artist Nathan Hilu, a Sephardic Jew, who, as a member of the U.S. Army, guarded the Nazi war criminals at the Nuremberg trials. Most were sentenced to be hanged, and Nathan and the other guards were there to prevent the condemned prisoners from committing suicide. Nathan, then a young man, had revealing interactions with Hermann Goering, Julius Streicher, Albert Speer, and others which provided him with insights into the ordinariness of the men who committed monstrous acts. I n the decades since, Nathan, now in his nineties, has processed these memories in his compulsively executed drawings. This skillfully produced and thought-provoking documentary delves into the
process of transforming the artist’s visual memory, albeit perhaps faulty, into a vital archive of this massive human tragedy.
The program will begin with the short comedy ‘ We Should Eat ‘ by Shaina Feinberg.
A family dinner takes an unexpected turn when a 12-year-old’s school project on identity forces everyone to question who they are—and what’s really on the menu. The cast includes Tova Feldshuh and Alysia Reiner.
Discussion to follow via Zoom with Elan Golod, Shaina Feinberg and Dr. Di Wolfsohn.
