Shirley Jackson (1916–1965) was an acclaimed American novelist and short story writer, celebrated for her contributions to the horror and mystery genres. In the 1940s Jackson and her family moved to Vermont where she wrote some of her most notable works including The Haunting of Hill House (1959) and We Have Always Lived in the Castle (1962). Jackson’s writing often drew upon her experiences living in rural Vermont as well as her lifelong interest in witchcraft and the occult. Her stories blend the everyday with the uncanny, exploring the darker corners of human nature and the societal tensions of mid-century America. Jackson’s “The Lottery,” is today widely regarded as one of the twentieth century’s most famous short stories.
Tod Randolph has participated for years in the Wharton on Wednesday series at The Mount, reading on the terrace from Edith’s magnificent collection of short stories. Also at The Mount, she played Osric Dane in a stage adaptation of Xingu for the inaugural production of The Wharton Salon in 2007, and Mrs. Wharton in The Inner House, a one-woman biographical play by Dennis Krausnick, in 2012. She has been a member of Shakespeare & Company in Lenox since 1991, where she has played numerous lead roles in both Shakespearean and contemporary plays, directed several readings and one full production, and taught and directed in the actor training programs. She lives in Great Barrington.
Cash bar is available. Space is limited, please reserve your tickets.
Readings at Rockwell will take place on the first Wednesday of each month, March to May, in the galleries of the Museum. Each program will begin with a short talk about the author and the featured story. The program will begin at 6:00 pm, doors will open at 5:00 pm for viewing of the Anita Kunz exhibition.
