SUMMARY:World Premiere at Shakespeare & Co.: Lawrence Goodman’s The Victim
DESCRIPTION:The World Premiere of The Victim by Lawrence Goodman runs through July 21 at Shakespeare & Company. Three women\, three interconnected monologues: a successful New York doctor (Stephanie Clayman) whose racial diversity training has gone horribly wrong. A health aide grappling with racism during the COVID-19 pandemic (Yvette King). A Holocaust survivor (Annette Miller)\, facing her own horror and finding her way back to love and healing.\nWho gets to call herself a victim? Who is the perpetrator? Staged at Shakespeare & Company in 2024 as a reading in the Plays in Process series\, The Victim is about identity\, our blindness to others\, and the human capacity for cruelty and compassion.

SUMMARY:Welcome to Taconic Learning Center Autumn 2025 Classes ~
DESCRIPTION:Documentary Films on Transformative Moments in American History The United States has experienced numerous transformative events and eras\, as we appear to be experiencing now. This course will focus on several of the events that ultimately led to the bettering of America. \nBiblical Images This course will consider a number of Biblical images\, primarily in Italian art from the early Renaissance through the Baroque\, approximately 1300 to 1650. These images\, mostly painting\, some sculpture\, are “surprising” in that they appear to depart from their literal sources to express an expanded truth … the artistic imagination roams freely\, creating “surprising” images\, some of which we know well but haven’t thought about in just this way.\n..\nClassical Composer Jam Like any good jam session every star gets to have a turn. In this class we will give multiple composers – Berlioz\, Rachmaninoff\, Ravel\, and Debussy (and possibly an additional composer) a one-week slot consisting of a brief bio/history followed by a concert of some of their best compositions in quality full-length performances. \nSupreme Court Review and Conversation We will discuss several of the Court’s important cases of the 2024-2025 term in the context of a conversation class. This hybrid approach is the first step in my focusing less on the Court and more on conversation for reasons we will discuss \nEudora Welty Short Stories Welty grew up in Jackson\, Mississippi\, at a time when women had limited opportunities for work or career outside the home. The culture in the region included persistent barriers of race\, gender\, and class. These form a kind of back-drop for Welty’s stories\, but it is her creative genius that stands out. \nHealthcare in the United States According to the Commonwealth Fund’s 2023 “Mirror\, Mirror” report\, the United States ranks last among 11 (eleven) high-income countries in healthcare system performance. Other key findings from the report: Overall Rank: Last; Access to Care: Last; Health Outcomes: Last; Efficiency: Second to last; Equity: Third to last. The instructor’s specialty is health care policy and public health\, and would like the class to be a learning experience for us all. \nThe Power of the Shared Experience The return of Jerry Jamin to our teaching colleagues features a discussion group\, direction to be determined as discussions evolve. \nBeyond Maigret: The Darker Side of Georges Simenon Although he is known in the US primarily for his many detective novels featuring inspector Jules Maigret\, Georges Simenon was the author of far more novels often characterized as psychological studies of people on the edge. \nPlays You Haven’t Heard Of Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway often present plays that Broadway won’t touch. The themes or characters may be too controversial\, the playwrights may not be of note\, or the producers don’t think the play will draw an audience. These plays are often produced at small non-Equity theaters in different parts of the country that offer interesting and provocative work. This program will discuss several of these plays and will show scenes from them.

SUMMARY:Ferrin Contemporary Presents: Kadri Pärnamets: MURAKA
DESCRIPTION:Kadri Pärnamets: Muraka is a new exhibition by one of Project Art’s resident artists. The exhibition features porcelain sculptures reflecting on the universal element of water and natural forms opening during Riverfest and Project Art’s Open House on Saturday\, September 20th. The public is invited to a short talk with Kadri and gallery director\, Leslie Ferrin followed by a reception at 4:30 pm. The exhibit is on view through November 15\, 2025. \nThe exhibition builds on two bodies of work: Kadri Pärnamets: Choreography of Water\, her 2022 solo show at Ferrin Contemporary in North Adams\, Massachusetts\, as well as her design for her first site responsive public art commission Fire Sculpture at Claytopia at Guldagergaard in Skælskør\, Denmark. The works in Muraka continue themes of abstract biomorphic forms inspired by water\, air\, and the changing environment of the river ecosystem. Pärnamets uses water as a metaphor; her multicolored surfaces and organic forms visually reference water’s vast\, expansive body that connects land and sky and its forces that impact both protect and threaten the land\, earth’s inhabitants and possibly humanity itself. \nKadri Pärnamets: Muraka opens during RiverFest on September 20th\, organized by Cummington Cultural District. The family-friendly\, participatory day long programs celebrate the wild and scenic Westfield River that runs through the heart of Cummington\, MA. Throughout the festival\, artists\, humanists\, and scientists share their practices and knowledge as a frame for hands-on\, experiential\, and sensory experiences for participants across a variety of means of engagement\, including workshops\, walks\, guided movement\, performances\, and public artworks. As part of this\, Kadri and her husband\, sculptor Sergei Isupov\, will host a day-long RAKU firing. Participants may bring up to four bisqued ceramic pieces to glaze and fire during their chosen firing slot. Visit Project Art’s event page to learn more and register.

SUMMARY:Unveiling: A Show of Portraits – Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Sandisfield Arts Center is pleased to present Unveiling\, a group exhibition featuring artists working with portraiture across a range of mediums. The show considers the idea of the portrait as more than a representation of physical likeness — as a possibility for deeper engagement and a vantage into an inner world. Together\, these portraits capture the complexities of identity\, memory\, and personality. \nOpening reception Saturday\, October 18\, 4 to 6 pm. The show continues weekends until December 7.

SUMMARY:"MORE": Paintings by Anna Cypra Oliver
DESCRIPTION:“MORE”: Paintings by Anna Cypra Oliver\nOctober 3 – November 2\, 2025\nOpening Reception: Saturday\, October 3rd\, 3-5:30 \n510 Warren Street Gallery\n510 Warren St.\, Hudson\, NY \n510warrenstgallery@gmail.com\n510warrenstreetgallery.com\nannaoliverartist.com \nHrs: Friday – Saturday\, 12-6\, Sunday\, 12-5 \nHudson\, NY – 510 Warren Street Gallery is pleased to present the fourth show at the gallery for Anna Cypra Oliver\, titled “MORE.” This show of paintings by the artist begins on Friday\, October 3rd and ends on Sunday\, November 2\, 2025. Visitors are welcome. Please join us for a reception with the artist on Saturday\, October 4th from 3 to 5:30 pm. \nSince moving to the Berkshires in 2017\, Anna Cypra Oliver has been fascinated by the meadows and roadside verges that line the roads of her semi-rural neighborhood. When she paints\, she tries to observe\, as closely as possible\, small splashes of light\, changes in color\, in shape\, dark against light\, the blue shadow of a flower carving itself into the bright green of a leaf. She looks hard for the telling detail\, trying to see where light slashes against dark\, where a form emerges in the background of a chaotic foreground. She’s drawn to bright color\, to subtle shifts from one color to another\, and to changes in light. Weeds are as beautiful to her as cultivated flowers\, the wild abundance along every road as the summer progresses: phlox to tiger lilies to cornflowers to Queen Anne’s Lace to purple loosestrife\, but it is really pattern that she is rendering: not the pattern of reality so much as the pattern of form and light. Less is not more to her. Whatever her subject – meadows\, overgrown flower beds\, Mason jars of farmers’ market blooms\, a fish pond – she tries to capture it in all its tangled complexity. \nA writer as well as an artist\, Anna Cypra Olive’s paintings have appeared along with her published essays\, in The B and on the cover of The Best American Poetry 2017. Her memoir\, Assembling My Father (Houghton Mifflin/Mariner Books)\, Layers text\, multiple strands of narrative and images\, ultimately presenting a literary archeology excavated from her parents’ history and her own. \nAlso on view at 510 Warren Street Gallery this month is the work of Laura Chester\, Lionel Delevingne\, Trevor Hunter\, Stephan Marc Klein\, Kate Knapp\, Anne Levitt\, John Lipkowitz\, Nina Lipkowitz\, Mike Magnotti\, Hannah Mandel\, Paul Nueckel\, Marilyn Orner\, Ailian Price\, Janet Hetherwick Pumphey\, Peggy Reeves\, Kenneth Sahr\, Doris Simon\, Guy Sobering\, Ken Tannenbaum\, and Thierry Taule.
