Robert U. Taylor:
An Exhibition of Watercolor Paintings of the Berkshires in Autumn and Winter

Hotel on North

297 North St., Pittsfield, Massachusetts

An Exhibition of Watercolor Paintings of the Berkshires in Autumn and Winter by local artist Robert U. Taylor, will be on view at the Gallery, Hotel on North, 297 North Street in Pittsfield, from May 3 through June 24 Every Day.

This Exhibition presents a series of large paintings of the south  Berkshires, expressed in a tight realism. They depict both the powerful chiaroscuro of sun and shade during these seasons, and what may be an overlooked side of winter – that it can have, in strong sunlight, as bright and powerful a range of colors as autumn.

Robert U. Taylor was born in Virginia, studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Pennsylvania, and graduate work in Scenic Design at Yale University. He went on to professionally design over 100 productions on and off Broadway, (where he has had three shows running on Broadway at once) and repertory and regional theaters. He then, moving into the film industry, designed over 700 commercials, many of which won Clios. He has had ten one man shows of his paintings, watercolor and oil in the US. He has been on the faculty at Princeton University, Hunter College in New York, and taught graduate classes in CGI film VFX Design at the R.I.S.D. He has been a Lecturer on CGI film at Yale University. His works can be seen in various books on set design over the past 20 years, and have been on exhibition at the Smithsonian, the International Theater Institute, and at the San Antonio McNay museum's permanent collection of art. He won two Drama Desk Awards, the Maharam Award, and two Obie Awards; "Raisin", which he designed, won four Tonys.

Taylor continued into the VFX film world, where he designed the cutting edge Omnimax “Back to the Future” ridefilm for Doug Trumbull at Universal Theme Park in Orlando. He then designed a three ridefilm format extravaganza including the entire entertainment floor at Luxor Las Vegas; many feature film effects (the enormous dystopian model sets for “Judge Dredd”, space ships for “Event Horizon” and “Starship Troopers”, the painted living landscapes in “What Dreams May Come”, FX for "Eraser", and shot layouts for “The Matrix”. He has designed architecture extensively in the Berkshires,  and a variety of ridefilms, 3Dfilms, and architecture for theme parks – Santa Claus Village in Vermont, the Make A Wish Foundation's Wishing Castle in Monroe, NJ; a Sesame Street Darkride project for Resorts World, Singapore, Universal’s Dubailand in Dubai, show environment designs for Wuhan Movie Themepark, created by the Dalian Wanda Group in Wuhan, China, attraction designs for the Dalian Group in Harbin, Nanchang, and Guangzhou parks. He designed again for Doug Trumbull on a pilot project involving 3D 4K 120fps imagery, called U.F.O.T.O.G., and completed numerous designs for the McBride Design Group, notably the MargaritaVille Hollywood Hotel in FL, a 320 acre development with a 45 acre lake and 1000 Key West styled homes called Margarita Village Orlando FL, Nickelodeon Theme Park Hotel in Mexico and a Hasbro Theme Park hotel in Dallas and a variety of other hotel, restaurant and retail venues in other States in the US.
