Cinematics inspires you to explore the unique relationship between music, cinema, and the human spirit. This curated series of films will expand your perception of classical music and provide emotional depth to your concertgoing experience. Presented in collaboration with the Berkshire Film Festival.

June 30
Tous les matins du monde, a historical drama about the life and times of eminent composer and J.S. Bach contemporary Marin Marais. The film will be screened as part of the Linde Center for Music and Learning’s Opening Weekend and the evening prior to Tanglewood Music Center’s July 1 performances of Bach cantatas, conducted by John Harbison.

July 7
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, a World War II drama with a love theme by André Previn that’s among the most memorable in the history of cinema. It will be screened during Tanglewood’s summerlong celebration of Sir André’s 90th birthday, which includes the world premiere of Previn and Tom Stoppard’s Penelope on July 24th at Seiji Ozawa Hall.

July 14
Defiant Requiem, an acclaimed documentary about the performance of Verdi’s Requiem by Jewish prisoners at a Nazi concentration camp.

JULY 21
Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters is a close-up portrait of the acclaimed photographer as he creates his stunning images, filmed with unprecedented access over a decade.

JULY 28
A Tale of Tanglewood: Peter Grimes Reborn weaves a tapestry that travels back and forth over the 50 years that separate the American premiere of Benjamin Britten’s opera, conducted by Leonard Bernstein in the Theatre, and a remount of the work at Tanglewood this time with Maestro Seiji Ozawa on the podium.

AUGUST 4

John Cage Film & Song Books Selections
An unconventional evening of film, promenade music, and theater at the Linde Center. Select works from experimental composer John Cage’s Song Books—including solos for voice, voice with electronics, and theatrical action with and without electronics—are combined with film excerpts associated with Cage for an unforgettable experience.

AUGUST 11
Babette’s Feast, with a score by acclaimed contemporary composer and writer Per Nørgård, explores the story of a 19th century Parisian political refugee who seeks shelter in a rough, Danish coastal town. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1987.

AUGUST 18
Impromptu, a film set in 1830s France in which pianist/composer Frédéric Chopin is pursued romantically by the determined, independent woman and notorious writer who uses the name George Sand.

AUGUST 25
Score: A Film Music Documentary tracks the progress of modern-day film score development and turns the spotlight on the creative struggles involved in composing major motion picture scores. It features interviews with more than 50 composers, directors, orchestrators, and other film industry professionals.
