Evelyn Augusta Guartha, 100, of Great Barrington

After becoming a registered nurse Evelyn did private duty nursing for five years, then served as a Supervisor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Fairview Hospital for 36 years, retiring in 1980.

Evelyn Augusta Guartha, 100, a lifelong resident of Reed Street, passed away at the Great Barrington Nursing Home on Maple Avenue on October 6, 2015, where she had resided for the past few years.

Evelyn was born in Great Barrington on March 15, 1915, daughter of Frank S. and May Hutchinson Guartha. She was a 1933 graduate of the former Searles High School and a 1937 graduate of the former Henry W. Bishop III Memorial School of Nursing in Pittsfield. She also did post-graduate work in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the New York Hospital in New York City.

After becoming a registered nurse Evelyn did private duty nursing for five years, then served as a Supervisor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Fairview Hospital for 36 years, retiring in 1980.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Great Barrington and the Bishop Memorial Alumnae Association. She enjoyed traveling, especially cruises.

She is survived by a lifelong friend, Linda Mullany, who saw to her comfort and well-being, as well as cousins and numerous friends. A very special thank you to the wonderful loving staff who cared for Evelyn for the past several years. They can never be thanked enough for what they do.

As per Evelyn’s wishes, there will be no funeral or calling hours.

Everyone is invited to a graveside service on Friday, October 9 at 1:30 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery, 90 Stockbridge Road, Great Barrington, Mass., conducted by Rev. Charles Vanausdall of the First Congregation Church.

Thomas F. ‘Walt’ Palivoda, 72, of Housatonic

Walt’s family will receive friends on Friday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by a funeral service officiated by Deacon Ed Shaw at Birches-Roy Funeral Home. A reception will follow at Wyantenuck Country Club. Private burial will be at a later date.
