Elsie Margaret Pope, 88, of Lenox

Elsie spent countless hours attending her sons’ sporting and school events, and even helped them with some of their earliest jobs, including paper routes.

Elsie Margaret (Ferguson) Pope, 88, of Lenox, died Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Berkshire Place, where she had resided for the past two and a half years.

Born in Pittsfield on January 29, 1929, to the late James and Margaret (Parker) Ferguson, she attended Lenox High School, graduating in 1947.

After high school, Elsie worked as an assistant for the O’Hearn dental practice, and as a sales associate for England Brothers, Textiles, and Elaine’s Bridal and Dress Dhop. However, raising her six sons was the role she was most proud of. Elsie spent countless hours attending her sons’ sporting and school events, and even helped them with some of their earliest jobs, including paper routes.

Elsie and her husband, Joseph C. Pope, who passed on January 16, 2000, were married in 1948. Married for 52 years, Elsie and Joe loved to travel. They imparted their love for the Maine coast upon their sons, who still visit the small beach community that they grew up going to with their own families’ every summer.

Elsie was an avid reader, an animal lover, spending time in her garden, and she enjoyed following New England Sports, especially the Red Sox. Her favorite way to spend her time was hosting her large family in her home for cookouts and holiday dinners, which always included playing cards with her sons and grandchildren. She was a communicant of Church on the Hill.

Elsie is survived by her five sons: James “David” Pope of Pittsfield, Brian J. Pope (Mindy) of Old Lyme, Conn., Dean C. Pope (Bridget), Glen S. Pope (Martha), and Douglas L. Pope (Lisa) all of Pittsfield, eleven grandchildren: Ryan, Evan, Ethan, Vanessa, Stephanie, Rachel, Jonathan, Cameron, Makayla, Molly, Madeline, and two great-grandchildren: Zyiana and Sky.

Besides her parents and husband, Elsie is predeceased by her son, Kerry M. Pope.

The family will be having a private burial service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice Care of the Berkshire in care of the Roche Funeral Home, 120 Main Street, Lenox, MA 01240
