Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Boddie, 82, of Great Barrington died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018, at her home.

Betty was born Jan. 10, 1936, in Great Barrington, the daughter of George P. Jr. and Helen (Verchot) Atwood. She was a graduate of the former Searles High School class of 1953. Betty worked as a secretary, clerk and tax collector for the Town of Great Barrington for 20 years (1952–72), then at M.T. Cavanaugh as a bookkeeper and manager from 1972 to 1982 and, from 1982 till her retirement in 1995, she worked as a manager of College Services for Simons College. She was a communicant of Saint Peter’s Church, a member of the Thursday Morning Club, and enjoyed reading, crossword and jigsaw puzzles and spending time with her grandchildren. Betty was also a former special policewoman for the Town of Great Barrington, a volunteer at Fairview Hospital and Marian Fathers Helpers. Betty’s husband, John P. Boddie, who she married May 7, 1955, in Saint Peter’s Church in Great Barrington by Fr. Karrigan, predeceased her Sept. 16, 2017.
Betty is survived by four daughters: Elizabeth “Betty” Kinne, Jean Welch and husband Joe, Mary Cahill and husband Bill, and Ann Brassard and significant other Andy West; two brothers: Thomas P. Atwood and Richard B. Atwood; two sisters: Mary Ryan and Teresa Bannon; six grandchildren: Shawn Kinne, Daniel Kinne, Victoria Welch, Julia Welch, Lindsie Hotaling and Samantha Brassard; and four great-grandchildren: Emmett, Eleanor, Malcolm and Chloe. In addition to her husband, Betty was predeceased by two daughters: Barbara Jean Boddie and Theresa Ann Boddie; grandson Michael Hotaling Jr.; and great-grandson Owen Kinne.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Elizabeth “Betty” Boddie will be held Thursday, Feb. 8, at 10 a.m. at Saint Peter’s Church with Reverend William P. Murphy, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Saint Peter’s Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, Feb. 8, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Betty’s memory may be made to the Thursday Morning Club, Saint Peter’s Church Restoration Fund or HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.
