Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Hayes, 93, of Longmeadow, Mass.

A small private memorial service will be held in June with the family celebrating Betsy’s life.

Elizabeth “Betsy” Hayes, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away in March 2025 after over 93 years of a life well lived. She was born in Evanston, Ill., to Dr. Robert Moore Jones and Elizabeth Drew (Fowler) Jones.

Elizabeth “Betsy” Hayes.

Betsy graduated from New Trier High School in 1949 and earned her degree from Smith College in 1953. She later obtained her master’s in library science from AIC in 1977. Her passion for education led her to a fulfilling career as a librarian, primarily in the East Longmeadow Elementary Schools, including Meadow Brook, Mapleshade, and Mt. View. She also had fond memories of her time working in Enfield, Conn.; Cowing Elementary School in West Springfield, Mass.; as well as Hatch Library at Bay Path College in Longmeadow, Mass.

Betsy always loved reading, learning, and traveling. After graduating from Smith College, she moved to Washington, D.C., with friends. There she met her husband Bruce when they worked together as buyers for the Woodward and Lothrop department store. They were married for over 60 years, and together they created a loving home for their family in Longmeadow. They enjoyed traveling the world together. An active member of her community, Betsy was a founding member of the Longmeadow Newcomers Club and contributed significantly as a volunteer for the Junior League of Greater Springfield, as a docent for the Springfield Museums, as well as an active member of her Current Events Club. Her dedication to education was recognized with the Pioneer Valley Reading Council Award in 2001 for her efforts in establishing a school library in Holyoke, Mass. Additionally, she was forever an avid Smithie and was honored to receive the Smith College Alumnae Association Volunteer Award for her commitment to her alma mater.

Betsy’s humor and quick wit will be missed by all who knew her. She cared about anyone who came into her circle, and she remained interested in all aspects of their lives.

Betsy is survived by her children, Robert B. Hayes and Elizabeth H. McGraw (Robert), and her grandchildren, Anne McGraw, Madeleine McGraw, Seamus McGraw, Elizabeth Hayes, and Robert Hayes. She was predeceased by her brothers, Robert Jones and Peter Jones (Gwen), as well as many other ancestors who wonder what took her so long in finally joining them. Betsy leaves behind many friends and a legacy of kindness and service. A heartfelt thanks goes out to the caring staff at Kimball Farms in Lenox.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Storrs Library in Longmeadow or Smith College class of 1953 fund in Northampton. A small private memorial service will be held in June with the family celebrating Betsy’s life.
