Egremont voters should adopt Community Preservation Act

Let’s not leave state dollars on the table. Let’s invest in the things that make Egremont such a special place to live.

To the editor:

On May 13, Egremont voters have the chance to say yes to a stronger future by adopting the Community Preservation Act (CPA). This small surcharge on our property tax bills — just $75 a year for a $500,000 home — would give Egremont access to tens of thousands of dollars in additional state funds every year. These funds can be used only for things we value: protecting open space, preserving our historic character, expanding recreational opportunities, and supporting affordable housing.

This is about local control for local priorities. A Community Preservation Committee made up of Egremont citizens would recommend projects, and Town Meeting would have the final say on how the money is spent. That means Egremont decides where every dollar goes.

CPA is already working in our neighboring towns. Great Barrington helped first-time homebuyers and restored a Main Street landmark. Stockbridge improved parks and outdoor spaces. Lenox expanded its trail network. Egremont deserves the same opportunities—and more importantly, the funding to make them happen.

Let’s not leave state dollars on the table. Let’s invest in the things that make Egremont such a special place to live.

Vote yes on the CPA ballot question on May 13. Your vote is your voice in shaping Egremont’s future.
