Edward Allen Keefner, 82, of Great Barrington

In keeping with Ed’s wishes, there are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Ed’s memory may be made to the Great Barrington Fire Department in care of the Birches-Roy Funeral Home.

Edward Allen Keefner, 82, of Great Barrington died peacefully on Saturday, August 12, 2023 in the home that he built surrounded by his loving family. Ed was born on April 7, 1941 in Hillsdale, N.Y., son of Rosemary (Decker) Hand and the late Raymond Keefner Sr.

After graduating from high school, Ed proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from April 1958 to March 1961, then in the reserves until April of 1964, where he was a Bridge Specialist, Construction Equipment Operator, and Military Police. He attained the rank of SP4 (E-4)(T) and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal.

After his service, Ed worked as a carpenter for Kane and Melvin and as a cutter grinder for Clark Aiken-Matik, before retiring in December 1992. In his younger years, Ed enjoyed hunting, deep sea fishing, golfing, and playing pitch.

Ed’s wife, Sharon L. Kane, whom he married on September 6, 1969, predeceased him on July 11, 2020. Ed is survived by his mother, Rosemary (Decker) Hand of Albany; his son, Brian M. Keefner and wife Collen Torrant; his daughter, Shannon Wellauer-Devergilio and husband Robert; his brother, Raymond Keefner Jr.; his sister, Rosemary “Midge” Crine; his six grandchildren, Kayne Wellauer, Keegan Wellauer, Brady Devergilio, Kealy Devergilio, Aden Keefner, and Devon Keefner; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Ed’s wishes, there are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Ed’s memory may be made to the Great Barrington Fire Department in care of the Birches-Roy Funeral Home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. Condolences may be made through the funeral home’s website.
