Dorothy Skorput Hotchkiss, 92, of Great Barrington

At Dorothy’s request, there will be no services. Burial will be private.

Dorothy Skorput Hotchkiss passed away peacefully on January 1, 2025, in Great Barrington. she was born in West Stockbridge on November 9, 1932, to Peter and Pauline Skorput.

The youngest of nine children, Dorothy attended West Stockbridge schools and graduated from Williams High School in Stockbridge in 1950. Dorothy met Robert Hotchkiss, who was a civil engineer working on the Massachusetts Turnpike, and they were married in 1955. They resided in Troy, N.Y., during all of their married life. Robert Hotchkiss died in 1989. Dorothy then returned to the Berkshires, where she resided with her sister Frances Toolin until 2021. Frances passed in 2021.

Dorothy was known for her accounting skills, and she worked in the billing department at St. Peter’s Hospital for many years. She and Frances managed the Fairview Hospital gift shop, and Dorothy took great pleasure in her relationships with so many hospital staff. Dorothy was active in the Homeowners Association on Cornwall Drive in Great Barrington, where she resided. She created lovely gardens at that home and could often be found taking walks and enjoying the scenery and the wildlife. An avid amateur photographer, Dorothy searched the local countryside in pursuit of beautiful subjects.

Dorothy’s beloved husband, her parents, and her eight siblings predeceased her. She will be missed by many nieces and nephews and their children. She was “Aunt Dort” to all.

At Dorothy’s request, there will be no services. Burial will be private. In Dorothy’s memory, donations may be made to the Great Barrington Fire Department in care of Birches-Roy Funeral Home, 33 South Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230. Condolences may be made through the funeral home’s website.

A Mass to celebrate Virginia's life will be held at St. Mary's Church in Lee, at 10 a.m., on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025. Following Mass, she will be laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery, which is within chipping range of Greenock Country Club's third hole.
