Donation leads to purchase of van for Senior Center

Thanks to an anonymous donation, the Claire Teague Senior Center has acquired a new Ford Edge to transport seniors after being on a waitlist for more than a year.

Great Barrington — Thanks to an anonymous donation, the Claire Teague Senior Center now has a new Ford Edge to transport seniors.

According to town publicist Ellen Lahr, about two years ago a resident gave an envelope to the Senior Center which included a check for $40,000. “The donor of this money wants to remain anonymous,” Lahr wrote The Berkshire Edge via email. “There were many twists and turns, along with supply chain issues in getting this vehicle.”

After a wait of over a year, the vehicle was recently delivered to the Senior Center. “We were on a waiting list for quite some time, but we are thrilled that we have a new vehicle to join our fleet,” Senior Center Director Polly Mann Salenovoch said. “We already have two very large vans that can seat up to nine people, and we have another van that can seat up to eight people. But we needed a smaller vehicle because we are going into Pittsfield a lot. The gas mileage during the winter is something of an inconvenience for larger vehicles. Now that we have a smaller vehicle, it will be a lot easier to transport seniors.”

Salenovoch said that the new vehicle will be able to transport up to five residents at a time. She added that the Senior Center itself is continuing with its various programs. “We have bingo, tap dancing parties, cookouts, and a monthly free box lunch program,” Salenovoch said. “We also have yoga and tai chi classes, along with computer lessons and health insurance counseling. I think that seniors must know that we offer many services daily.”
