Donald James McGrory, 73, of West Stockbridge passed away on April 8, 2022.

The son of Donald and Francis McGrory, Don was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. Don was a passionate and respected blues musician.
As a young man, his love for delta blues began, naturally in his hometown. He studied guitar with blues legend Furry Louis. He had memories of his mom taking him to the local ballfield to see Elvis and watch Jerry Lee Lewis play at his high school dances. Don studied architecture at Memphis State but life had other plans. The call of New York came in 1971, bringing Don to the big city and new musical adventures. He worked and played
there in notable clubs for several years, moving to the Berkshires in 1976.
Don worked in local restaurants and developed relationships with other musicians that would last for decades. He played guitar for a piano player who was also an antique oriental rug dealer. Don was fascinated by the beauty and history of antique rugs, thus began his Rug career lasting more than 40 years. Over the years, Don had four rug stores in Great Barrington and one in West Stockbridge, retiring in 2019.
Don was known for his prowess on guitar and his treasured nationals. He was an accomplished solo artist and a member of many bands “The incredible pointless Brothers,” “Mojo coffee,” “The Hoo Doo Rhythm Dogs,” “Little Donnie and the Rockets,” and “Delta soul” to name a few. Sessions in his practice room were graced by the most talented musicians around. He also recorded a couple of records. Don’s love of the blues never diminished. He could be an enigma. At times a demanding taskmaster for his band mates, a teacher, a friend, an inspiration, Don was a valued member of our Berkshire community.
He leaves his wife, Robin Greeson; his son, Alexander McGrory; and his family, Max, Rachel, Andrew, Levon, and Francis. Don is also survived by his beloved dog, Rothko.
