News and Ideas Worth Sharing

Do we really want Trump to ‘succeed’?

No one who cares about this country should want Trump to succeed.

To the editor:

This morning, I heard yet another Democratic office holder say that, “of course,” he wants Trump to succeed. We heard this in 2016 too.

Are these people crazy?

Think about what Trump succeeding would mean:

  1. The military bursting into businesses and homes in Massachusetts, rounding people up without due process and deporting or imprisoning them. In France, schools have memorial plaques commemorating the Jewish students who were deported from that building. Do we really want one of those plaques in the hallway at Monument Mountain Regional High School?
  2. Your children and grandchildren at risk of dying from childhood diseases that were eradicated before most of us were born?
  3. Ukraine falling to Putin and Russia being emboldened to attack more of Eastern Europe?
  4. America ceding 70 years of real leadership on the international scene?
  5. Prices going up to accommodate Trump’s tariffs. Estimated costs per family could be $3,800.
  6. The dismantling of essential government functions: FEMA, the FDA, the FAA, the NIH. The list goes on. Across the board, loyalty will replace competence. As we saw in the first Trump administration, the two are incompatible.
  7. The challenges to the free press: the shutdown of CBS, the legacy media.
  8. And of course, think about the Supreme Court if Sonia Sotomayor retires. How many more challenges to reproductive and personnel freedom for both men and women would result?
  9. How much longer will we be able to postpone dealing with climate change? Trump doesn’t even think it is real. Do we want his promotion of fossil fuels to succeed?
  10. Do we really want Trump’s mindless support of Netanyahu to succeed? Do the people who care about Gaza and the Palestinians and who voted for Trump—why?—really think he offers a solution?

This is what Trump succeeding would look like. Remember, Hitler succeeded.

No one who cares about this country should want Trump to succeed. Keeping him from succeeding should be the mandate for the Democratic Party and all patriotic Americans.
