Consider a gift to Mother Earth this holiday season

Planet care, like self-care, is too essential to scratch just to make things easier in the short run.

To the editor:

We are at that “making a list, checking it twice” time of year. Let’s all consider a gift for Mother Earth while we are at it—a gift that keeps on giving to everyone year after year. It may seem like asking for more at a time when lists are already overwhelming. Nevertheless, planet care, like self-care, is too essential to scratch just to make things easier in the short run. We all know we pay dearly in the long run if we keep using that approach. Think Housatonic River for example.

Enjoy your festivities even more by taking good care of yourself and Mother Earth: Wrap gifts with sustainable, reused, or repurposed materials; consider alternative gift ideas like movie tickets versus more stuff; reduce food waste and compost all you can, including Christmas trees and greens (no tinsel, wire, or sprayed items). Anyone can drop off greenery for a food or monetary food pantry donation at Meadow Farm’s Giving Tree Event on Saturday January, 10, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., 1125 Meadow St., Lee. You may also sign up for a small fee with Second Chance Composting for greenery/composting pickup or drop-off in northern Berkshire County. Small changes over time make a long-lasting impact, save money, and create new holiday (and every day) traditions that add to our satisfaction whenever we celebrate with each other. Best wishes to all for a healthier, happier, greener Holiday Season.
