If this house could talk, what secret would it tell about its history?
The original cottage structure was built in 1805, then expanded in the mid-19th and 20th centuries. Throughout that time, the house has shared the property with an ancient sycamore (buttonball) tree, one of the oldest and largest in New England, giving this triangle section of the village the name “Sycamore Place” on the old historic maps. This house has watched the village grow and thrive through its grist mill, axle company, and marble quarry days, when marble was apparently so plentiful that it was used to build the foundation walls, stairs and back patio areas. A basement fireplace under the original kitchen, and the low-ceilinged rooms above that kitchen, speak of a very different time…and the height markings preserved in a kitchen doorway track the growth of children as far back as 1948.
