Claire Elizabeth Lowrey, 89, of Lenox

Dedicated to teaching her entire life, Claire spent her last 23 years at Boston College, where she was appointed director of the Boston College Institute of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry.

Claire Elizabeth Lowrey, 89, died Friday, March 26, 2021 at Berkshire Medical Center.

A California native, Claire grew up in San Francisco’s Marina District, which overlooks the Golden Gate Bridge. Her high school years were spent at Sacred Heart Residential and Day School in Menlo Park, California.

Claire attended the University of San Diego, where she received her BA in English. Her interest in the work of education helped Claire decide to become a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart, an internationally recognized teaching order with schools throughout the world. She held teaching positions, as well as administration and leadership positions, in religious formation.

Claire was given many opportunities to accomplish her hopes and her goals. After she obtained her master’s degree in Religious Education, she went on to receive the Master’s of Divinity and the Doctor of Ministry from Andover Newton Theological School. Her last 23 years of teaching were spent at Boston College, where she was appointed director of the Boston College Institute of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry, now recognized as the BC School of Theology and Ministry.

Claire retired from Boston College at the age of 70 and chose to move to the Berkshires for her retirement.

Services for Claire E. Lowery will be private. Burial will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery.
