Chanukah is not for another two and a half months

These are not just historical holidays, but they are actively celebrated by members of the Jewish community of the Berkshires in their homes, their synagogues, and community-wide events.

To the editors:

Your publication of Carole Owens’ Viewpoint piece on the “story of Chanukah” on the eve of the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur is puzzling. Yom Kippur falls on the Jewish lunar date of 10th of Tishrei, which corresponds to Tuesday night, October 4 to Wednesday evening, October 5, this year.

For those less familiar with Jewish holidays, Chanukah is not for another two and a half months (beginning on the Jewish lunar date of the 24th of Kislev, which falls on Saturday night, December 17 this year) with other Jewish holidays, such as Sukkot and Simchat Torah, in between. These are not just historical holidays, but they are actively celebrated by members of the Jewish community of the Berkshires in their homes, their synagogues, and community-wide events.
