The very 1960s appeal of the piece was maintained, with a very 2018 sensibility bringing it up-to-date in feel while leaving things as they were written more than 50 years ago.
THEATRE REVIEW: ‘The Chinese Lady’ at Barrington Stage a lovely production of noble and current import
'The Chinese Lady' muses about the philosophic nature of history, cultural appropriation and similar serious topics.
THEATRE REVIEW: Stellar production of ‘Mary’s Wedding’ by Chester Theatre Company is romantically enveloping
Overall, the 89 minutes of this play never lose a bit of impact in this stellar production.
THEATRE REVIEW: ‘Pump Boys and Dinettes’ at the Theater Barn is a downright charmer
This has been one of my favorite little shows for 36 years and this production has only enhanced it in my mind.
THEATRE REVIEW: Shakespeare & Company’s ‘Creditors’ is a perfect piece of dramatic theater
Strindberg was way ahead of his time in probing the psychological recesses of adult relationships.
THEATRE REVIEW: ‘Seared’ at WTF constantly surprises with no stagnant moments
This is the sort of show that almost demands an in-house recording so that this company can play it eternally. It is one of the finest plays of the season anywhere.
REVIEW: ‘West Side Story’ at Tanglewood showcases spectacular union of music and dance
Most gratifying was the spontaneous roar from the crowd when the names of Leonard Bernstein, Jerome Robbins and Stephen Sondheim appeared in the end credits.
THEATRE REVIEW: ‘Lempicka’ at WTF features robust singing, unmemorable score
There is so much wonderful material in the life of Lempicka from which to draw a fabulous musical. Unfortunately, this is a loud, brash, fascinating piece that doesn't truly satisfy.
‘Wanda (Houston) Sings Sarah (Kohrs)!’ — jazz meets country at The Mahaiwe
The duo’s hard-hitting performance — one marked by the collision of Wanda Houston’s jazz edge with Sarah Kohrs’ country flare — creates playful, lively and penetrating interpretations of Kohrs’ original songs.
FILM REVIEW: 90 minutes in the woods with ‘Leave No Trace’
My selfish wish is that Granik worked a little faster; she’s released only four movies in fourteen years, and these days I’m hungry for artists who focus on the heart.
THEATRE REVIEW: WTF’s ‘Lempicka’ burdened by an overstuffed book, banal lyrics, style-less score
“Lempicka” could use a lot of trimming — cutting, too.
THEATRE REVIEW: Dark, obsessive ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ at the Mac-Haydn is emotionally sound, beautiful
There wasn't a single false note to be found in this company's interpretations, and so the story maintained its novelistic power through fidelity to Hugo's original intent.
DANCE REVIEW: Ronald K. Brown rocks The Pillow with story and swing
At a more philosophical plane he asks: What is dance and who can dance it? What is history and who gets to write it?
Tanglewood to host live-to-picture BSO performance of ‘West Side Story’
In live-to-picture productions, orchestras perform an entire movie score in real time as the film unspools. If a conductor gets out of sync with the moving picture, the show ends in catastrophe.
