Carol Purcell, 94, of Great Barrington

Carol Purcell, a longtime resident of Great Barrington, died on Saturday morning, October 26, 2024. Born in 1930 in Riverside, Calif., she was the daughter of Ezra and Edith Egly. She lived on six continents before she and her husband Arthur retired.

Past president of the People’s Pantry in Great Barrington, Carol has been an active member of the community since moving here in 1978.

Carol is survived by five children: Arthur Purcell of Andover, Mass.; Geoffrey Purcell of Great Barrington; Rachel Purcell of Ashley Falls; Nathaniel Purcell of New Brunswick, Canada; and Tristram Purcell of Housatonic. She also leaves seven grandchildren: Jess Purcell, Carolyn Pope, Charlotte King, Andrew Purcell, Sam Purcell, Robin Purcell, and Islay Purcell. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur W. Purcell.

In accordance with Carol’s wishes, there are no services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either The People’s Pantry or the Justice Resource Institute (in memo write re: Berkshire Meadows c/o Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230). Maureen Jane Johnson Hickey, 86, of Great Barrington and Naples, Fla.

There will be a gathering to celebrate the life of Maureen Johnson Hickey (1938-2025) at the Berkshire Botanical Gardens in Stockbridge on Saturday, June 28th from 1:00-3:00pm.

Howard Trombley, 77, formerly of Great Barrington

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 26 from 4 to 7:00 p.m. at Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington.  A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 27 at 10 a.m. at The First Congregational Church, 251 Main St., Great Barrington. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Great Barrington.

Janet C. Hutchinson, 80, of South Egremont

A celebration of Jan’s life will take place Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 3 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Meeting of South Berkshire. All are welcome to join in celebrating Jan’s life, followed by a reception.
