Carl R. ‘Smitty’ Smith, 72, of Great Barrington, counselor at Eagleton School

Carl proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam, serving in London, Otis Air Force Base, California and Alaska.

Carl R. “Smitty” Smith, 72, of Rosseter Street in Great Barrington died Tuesday February 7, 2017 at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington. He was born in Waverly, Alabama, on December 25, 1944, son of Willie Floyd and Dortheen Caldwell Smith.

Carl grew up in Great Barrington and was a graduate of the former Searles High School and received a Bachelor’s Degree from Fitchburg State College. Carl proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam, serving in London, Otis Air Force Base, California and Alaska.

He worked for many years as a counselor for Berkshire Prevention Alliance, Berkshire Training and Employment and at Eagleton School, retiring in 2005. Carl enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to the OTB and all sports.

Carl is survived by his longtime friend and companion, Jan Cosentino of Great Barrington; one son Kevin Smith of Rosealle, N.J.; one daughter, Carla Smith of Jersey City, N.J.; one brother, Nate Smith of Charlotte N.C.; one sister, Bernice Washington of S.C.; and four grandchildren, Devin Smith, Kylie Smith, Bilal Smith-McCloud and Ramandan Smith-McCloud.

Carl was predeceased by two sisters, Wileen Austin and Janice Ford and one brother, James Smith.

A funeral services for Carl R. Smith will be held on Saturday, February 11 at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Great Barrington with the Rev.Mattie Conaway officiating. Family will receive friends on Friday, February 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington MA 01230. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy in Carl’s memory may be made to the Kylie and Devin Smith College Fund in care of the funeral home.
