Butternut Fire update November 24: Operations focusing on monitoring and surveying

Rain and snow is expected during the week.

Great Barrington — Throughout the day on Sunday, Nov. 24, the emergency departments at the Butternut Fire continued to monitor the site, which at last report involved 1,388 acres of land in both Great Barrington and Sheffield.

The Great Barrington Fire Department did not report additional fire growth during the day.

The department announced on social media that the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing surveyed the area throughout the day using infrared imaging to identify hot spots.

The Monterey Fire Tower located at the fire site reported that they had not observed any smoke from the fire area.

The department reports that patrols and observations would be continuing throughout the night.

Hotspots are expected to show as a glow or as flare-ups in the area.

The command post for the fire is planned to be moved to Butternut for easier access and communications.

However, in their statement, the department announced “Let us be clear, this in no way implies that Ski Butternut is impacted, this is simply for logistics.”

Residents who notice flames can report it at (413) 528-0788 ext. 8 or can call 911 if there is immediate danger to property.

According to the National Weather Service, 30 mph wind gusts are forecasted for tonight. Rain is forecasted for late night on Monday, Nov. 25 going into Tuesday, Nov. 26.
Rain and snow is forecasted for both Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday, Nov. 29.
